I spent a substantial part of yesterday editing one and a half hours of video of the trip thus far, into just under eight minutes and forty five seconds.
I have now opened a youtube account, and posted my first video, which I had to leave dripping away over night because it’s not very fast to upload over the GPRS connection that I’m getting here in North Fambridge.
I’m a bit nervous about posting this to be perfectly honest. It’s one thing to be Nathan, hidden behind words, but it’s another to be Nathan on mini DV
I’ve also learnt some lessons while making this, and that is I “wasted” lots of film, and subsequently, due to the battery running out, didn’t film a lot of the interesting bits. Thankfully there was just enough juice left for a quick revival of the camera and a 360 pan, once I’d dropped the anchor for the night. I have also decided that I don’t really like iMovie; there were things I wanted to do that it couldn’t, and so the editing is a bit rough.
That said, please go easy on me since this is the first time I’ve ever attempted to film and then edit video.

Oh my god, you’re so ugly!
Good effort for your first video. I think some more footage from the back of the boat looking forward with the sails in view would be good rather than too much looking down into the water, although I like the bow wave shots. How come you ran out of battery? Are the solar panels not enough to keep the batteries charged?
Cool well impressed and if you are going to try and make them better I can’t wait as I enjoyed that one.
Hi Nath,
Glad to see its all going well thus far.
I must say, that is actually a pretty decent video for a first attempt. Keep it up lad!

Haha, cheers Rob!
I ran out of battery since the only way to charge the camcorder is via the mains. I’ve rectified this now though as I bought a 100w inverter which will run my laptop as well as the charge the camera, off the onboard domestic battery.
The single 20w panel I had when I left wouldn’t have kept up with it all though, so I’ve take the time here to fit the other one. I’ve got 40w now, but even so, I still think that’s going to be borderline.
If I can raise some money somehow, I’m going to get a charge coil fitted t the outboard, so at least I’ve got a ready source of reliable charge if it’s needed. The main problem not being the camcorder and laptop, but the autopilot.
We shall see.
ahoy there matey…..
