Still having good luck., originally uploaded by nathanleefloats.
30 knot gust hit and the gooseneck bolt sheared. Turned to come back and the outboard got swamped and cut out. Great. Luckily it started again so we didn’t have to beat under genoa. Sucks to be me. Haha

Better that it broke in daylight close to a safe port than out at sea at night…
I’d call that good luck!
Well Nathan, I don’t like saying I told you so (actually I love it) but that would never have happened if you had had it the right way up…
Seriously mate, what a bummer, hope you can get a decent fix and glad it wasn’t more of a disaster. Welcome to the ‘I had a broken gooseneck in the North Sea’ Club. There are quite a lot of members.
I think it would have gone anyway. The running rigging didn’t move, the kicker didn’t slip, it just sheared off. That’s 38 year old spars for you I guess.
Hi Nathan, really pleased to have found your website and realy pleased you’re getting on so well now – goose neck excepted, after the stop at Wells (I have the Westerly ketch that was in the boat park while you were there). We’ve managed quite a lot of sailing and wish I’d discovered it years ago!
Regards
Andy
I suddenly recall a Roger Taylor comment about sweeps.
Glad you ended up no worse off than you did – it could have been a much scarier outcome without the outboard I’m sure.
Think it’s a quick repair?
Shame about the gooseneck, nathan. Good luck getting it fixed. I am away cruising round Ireland for the next 2 weeks so wont be able to keep up with the news. Hope you get some good weather through the caledonian canal as it is quite beautiful. No tangling with Nessie!
