Keep Turning Left

September 24th, 2008

I’ve just noticed Dylan Winter has posted another part (or three) of his Keep Turning Left series. It’s a three part youtube account of sailing in and around the Crouch and Roach.

For anybody who has not been following his journey around the UK coastline, I absolutely recommend that you start doing so. His videos are well narrated and incredibly interesting, even to those weird people who don’t get on with boats.

Kudu and her crew actually met him during the making of these vids, so it’s nice to look back on video footage of that perfect English summer weekend.

I’d been following the series for a while with great interest, especially when he ventured up the Thames, and to my utter surprise while sailing up the Roach one evening I spotted a lone sailor in a Mirror Offshore. I grabbed the binoculars and peered at the tiny boat in the distance.

“Bloody hell, Huw” I said with a little too much excitment in my voice, “It’s bloody Dylan Winter!”. Huw had no idea what I was on about.

As he sailed past in the opposite direction I lost my usual craftsmanship of words and adopted gruff northerner mode…

“Is that Dylan?”

“yes”

“I watch your videos mate, nice one!”

A little later he gave up on the trip down river, turned around and sailed passed us again, now at anchor. After a quick exchange of words he finally managed to coax us into a race into the sunset, with a promise of a Whiskey at the finish line. Couldn’t really have said no, could we :)

If you haven’t watched any of Dylan’s Keep turning left series before, I emplore you to do so. He’s sailing around the UK coast bit by bit in his 19 foot Mirror Offshore and documenting it all in a very well produced and edited video diary, with narration and commentry about local facts throughout.

Either follow the link above and navigate from there, or search for “Keep turning left” on Youtube.
