When I set off sailing, I decided to film the endeavour. I’d never worked with video before, and the first few episodes are quite poorly cut, but these home films developed in to a 17 part sailing documentary.
It’s the real life version of going to sea, including the bad bits.
(trying to) Sail around Britain documentary on youtube
If you’re in the mood for some more sea related films, I can heartily recommend Dylan Winters excellent series at http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/ and if you want a night in with a sailing DVD, here’s a list of sea related films and documentaries I’ve enjoyed.
- Deep Water [DVD] [2006]
Fantastic documentary from the people who made Touching The Void
, about the Golden Globe race; the first ever attempt to sail a boat alone around the world, non stop.
- Get Ready to Cross Oceans: Offshore Sailing [DVD]
Lin and Larry Pardy are seriously experienced cruisers, and this instructional DVD is more of a filmed dream. It will have you preparing to sell and and sod off by the end of it, I promise

Hi Nathan
Love the series..throughly hooked !
I’m hoping to learn to sail myself soon, any tips ? any good sailing schools you can recommend (essex) ?
Good luck on the voyage, look forward to the next installment.
Paul
Join a sailing club, get talking to a few folks, and they’ll invite you out on their boats. That’s the best introduction you can get. The RYA method might put you off. You do need to know it, but you don’t need to use it (NORMALLY, in reality). Get some boat time with a friendly skipper, and if you get taken by it, go straight on to the Day Skipper course. Don’t bother with the competent crew in my opinion. If you can’t teach yourself a few knots, then you have no business going to sea, to be frank.
Ultimately, don’t get caught up in people telling you what you must do, and how. You’re supposed to be enjoying yourself out there, so my advice, is to hell with the misers, and just go and do it. You’ll soon find out your weak areas, and then you can make an informed decision about what you need to know. When I get back to Essex, you’re welcome to come out on Kudu.
Good luck, you won’t regret it.
Hi Nath
R U about this weekend? We’re down Friday night. Nelson’s blood a good drink for sea sickness (after a few you won’t feel nothin!!). Videos are great – keep um coming. C U if u still in Wells. If not let me know where u r.
Take Care – You’ve got my number
Hi just read your latest notes on kudu and realised that whilst you got hit with the bad weather I had the same whilst I was trying to get to the scillies. My corribee is Maybee Mk2, and I sailed from Lymington on the 19th August only to reach Lyme Regis after several misshaps(st albans Head),the Bill, west bay, then lyme regis, eventually spending a week there(0nly 75 miles could have walked it in the same time), so my adventure was over as well, but I learnt a lot about single handed sailing, and like you had plenty of help from complete strangers. I am trying to re-ajust to being off the boat, crazy when you know how small they are, but loads of fun.Well good luck for next year, I am tempted to just get maybee trailored to cornwall and start from there,6 weeks was just not enough especially when the the bad weather delayed me in port.
