Videos

Before I set off on my travels, I bought a cheap camcorder. I had never worked with video before, but thought I’d give it a go. I try and post updates as often as I can, but poor quality internet connections mean I struggle to do so. It may be a couple of weeks in between posts, and then 3 come along all at once. Also, since I live aboard, all the editing is done on the boat, which means I have to wait for the solar cells and wind turbine to build up enough power in the batteries to run my 230v inverter. All in all, please bear with me if the updates aren’t ever so regular.

Dylan Winter’s excellent creek crawling, slow paced, explorative, knowledge packed around britain series is absolutely essential watching in my opinion.  Dylan is a professional journo, and it shows in the quality of his series.

Nick Jaffe, of bigoceans.com has done some excellent videos. What he is doing, crossing oceans, makes Kudu’s little venture seem like a walk in the park!

    Hi Nathan

    Love the series..throughly hooked !
I’m hoping to learn to sail myself soon, any tips ? any good sailing schools you can recommend (essex) ?

Good luck on the voyage, look forward to the next installment.

  2. Join a sailing club, get talking to a few folks, and they’ll invite you out on their boats. That’s the best introduction you can get. The RYA method might put you off. You do need to know it, but you don’t need to use it (NORMALLY, in reality). Get some boat time with a friendly skipper, and if you get taken by it, go straight on to the Day Skipper course. Don’t bother with the competent crew in my opinion. If you can’t teach yourself a few knots, then you have no business going to sea, to be frank.

Ultimately, don’t get caught up in people telling you what you must do, and how. You’re supposed to be enjoying yourself out there, so my advice, is to hell with the misers, and just go and do it. You’ll soon find out your weak areas, and then you can make an informed decision about what you need to know. When I get back to Essex, you’re welcome to come out on Kudu.

Good luck, you won’t regret it.

Hi just read your latest notes on kudu and realised that whilst you got hit with the bad weather I had the same whilst I was trying to get to the scillies. My corribee is Maybee Mk2, and I sailed from Lymington on the 19th August only to reach Lyme Regis after several misshaps(st albans Head),the Bill, west bay, then lyme regis, eventually spending a week there(0nly 75 miles could have walked it in the same time), so my adventure was over as well, but I learnt a lot about single handed sailing, and like you had plenty of help from complete strangers. I am trying to re-ajust to being off the boat, crazy when you know how small they are, but loads of fun.Well good luck for next year, I am tempted to just get maybee trailored to cornwall and start from there,6 weeks was just not enough especially when the the bad weather delayed me in port.
